2. Freedom Writers vs Bronx Masquerade. Complete viewing guide.

Friday
1. Shadow Mrs. Collins Honors Lit Socratic Seminar.  Jot down norms observed best practices.
HW: Read speech by Malcolm X explaining the difference between separation and segregation.  Is his position simile to Mrs. G's coworker who deems desegregation a joke?  Form open ended questions around this question: Is segregation or separation better for African Americans than integration?

WEEK 7: February 13-17


Monday-Wednesday
  1. Notes: Copy rules to punctuating and formatting dialogue for your unit project. 
  2. Review Unit Project: Create a new character to add to Mr. Ward's 10th Literature class.  The character must be somebody totally new and unlike the other characters.  Complete the steps below for characterization to help bring this new character to life!
  3. Brainstorm: New character you will add as a new chapter to Bronx Masquerade. In your Writer's Workshop section copy the following characterization map to help you. Characters must have the following:
    • Personality Traits: Adjectives describing their personality
    • Speech: A few lines of dialogue that reveal their personality and struggle
    • Thoughts/Feeling: List how they feel about themselves, school, their classmates, family, their future
    • Effect on Others: How do the other classmates react to this student.  Does the character have enemies? Who? Do they have friends? Who?
    • Actions: What do they spend most of their time doing? What major things have they done?  What future goals are they working towards?  If they have no goals in life, why?
    • Looks: What do they look like (height, weight, skin color/complexion, hair texture, eye-color, etc) 
  4. Rough Draft: Open Microsoft Word, or Google Docs and begin typing your story for your new character.  Look at the novel for sentence starters and tips.
    • One page narration w/ a minimum of 7 examples of dialogue
    • An original poem about the character's conflict, future dreams, family, etc
      • Poem must use two literary devices
      • Poem must be minimum of 8 lines long
      • Poem must have a title connected to theme (main point)
      • Poem must have a TPCASTT organizer completed for it.
  5. Extra Credit: Design the cover of our class anthology for a HW grade if your artwork is selected by the class. See last years examples >>>HERE<<<
HW: Read pages 94-167 for characters Sterling-Mai Tren and complete the character log, vocab list#4 and a one-page rough draft with dialogue and narration for new character.

Thursday-Friday
  1. Finalize New Character Project
  2. Peer-edit using New Character Project Rubric as guide.
  3. Complete Character Map due with project
HW: Complete Unit 1 Study Guide, Study for Unit Test on Monday 27th (day back from break).  Any projects turned in on Monday 27th will be assessed late penalty of -5 pts. All those who turned it in on time will be rewarded +5 pts on top of final grade.

Monday
  1. Vocab List #3: Complete 2 words from the list.  The 10 words are due Friday 10th.
  2. Double Entry Journal: Complete a double entry on 4 characters in the novel.  Copy the information in your notes section of your notebook.
  3. Poetry Organizer: Choose 5 different poems from the novel and complete the chart for each poem.
HW: Read pages 50-100 by Friday 10th. Quiz on Janelle, Leslie, Judianne, Tanisha, Sterling

Tuesday
  1. Vocab List #3:: Complete 2 words from the list.  The 10 words are due Friday 10th.
  2. Mini-lesson: Take notes on characterization. Find examples of STEAL in novel by completing graphic organizer.
  3. Read pages 50-100 in preparation for the quiz this Friday.
Wednesday 
  1. FRESHMEN ORIENTATION WITH PT
