WEEK 9: Debate/Research Unit

RESOURCES: Syllabus, Persuasive Appeals (KELP), Identifying KELP in Ads , Persuasive Techniques

MONDAY
1. Complete 1-7 of the warm-up on dialogue. Write this in your warm-up section of notebook.
2. Read MDJ article 
3. Complete a persuasive paragraph supporting or opposing a position discussed in the article (HINT: RACER; 8 sentences).
4. Submit late New Character submissions using my email: Mr.Leu9Lit@gmail.com
HOMEWORK: None

TUESDAY
1. Take notes on 4 persuasive appeals (KELP)
2. Practice identifying appeals in print advertisements.
3. Watch The Great Debaters and complete the appeals organizer for the 3 debates in the film.  Also complete the viewing guide as these will serve as a study guide for quiz on Friday.
HOMEWORK: None

WEDNESDAY-THURSDAY
1. Warm-up: Write a paragraph explaining the persuasive appeals used in the anti-smoking ad.  Use TOP and RACER strategies to organize information.
2. Writer's Workshop: Analyze 2 student paragraphs from warm-up for RACER.  Revise your explanations so that they explain how your example supports your answer.
3. Watch The Great Debaters and complete the appeals organizer for the 3 debates in the film.  Also complete the viewing guide as these will serve as a study guide for quiz on Friday.
4. Complete vocab list #4 for the academic vocabulary related to our research/debate unit.
HOMEWORK: Study for quiz on vocab and persuasive appeals.

FRIDAY
1. Complete "Great Debaters" handout.  Have students refer to last page and notes to complete questions.

2.Read “America’s Schoolchildren” on pg. 70-74 in SpringBoard by President Obama. Complete questions 1-8 in textbook.  Identify the persuasive appeals in each of the 3 debates.
HOMEWORK: Vocab List #4, all Great Debaters questions due Monday 12th.
