MONDAY
1. Watch To Kill a Mockingbird and complete a STEAL organizer  to identify personality traits of Atticus Finch.
HW: 
-Find a modern day hero you want to compare to Atticus Finch in TKAM.

TUESDAY
1. Read over the Research Paper guidelines and due dates
2. Research a modern day Atticus Finch (a hero) and place facts and quotes about them on the provided Source/Note-card Sheet.  You need 2 sources besides To Kill a Mockingbird .
HW:

-2 STEAL Organizers (one for Atticus and one for your figure)
-Thesis Sentence 

WEDNESDAY-THURSDAY
1. Gather evidence to support your thesis comparing Atticus Finch to a modern day hero. Continue placing info on source/note cards.
2. Use the TKAM online novel and character list to gather info starting with the list of chapters.  Find parenthetical citations from the online novel using the chapter list to help guide you in finding the appropriate evidence to support your comparison paper.
3. Complete Works Cited Page info on each of your 3 source/note-card sheet (see below).

WEEK 11: Debate/Research Unit

MONDAY-TUESDAY
1. Copy down your debate topic, position, partner, and opponent in class
2. Complete debate organizer with your partner for the topic and position assigned to you in class.
3. Start your research on Pro vs. Con website for possible arguments supporting your position.  Write down the arguments on your debate organizer.
4. Complete a note card and source card for each of your arguments (Total: 2 arguments).  Here's a link with a source card organizer to help you complete your source cards for each evidence supporting an argument.
HW: All source/note cards are due by Wednesday 21st.

WEEK 10: Rhetorical Devices/Persuasive Appeals

MONDAY
1. Practice syllogisms by looking at the major and minor premise and whether the conclusion is logical and true. Use the formula below to help with your practice.

2. Reread the speech by President Obama and highlight 2 examples each of Ethos, Logos, and Pathos. Answer questions 1-8 from Springboard textbook.
3. Complete a paragraph using the Google Form below for question #4.
WRITING PROMPT
WHAT PERSUASIVE APPEAL IS MOSTLY USED BY PRESIDENT OBAMA IN PARAGRAPHS 13-16?  WHY MIGHT THE SPEAKER CHOOSE TO INCLUDE THIS OWN PERSONAL STORY HERE?  PROVIDE A MINIMUM OF 2 PARENTHETICAL CITATIONS TO SUPPORT YOUR ANSWER.

1. Complete 1-7 of the warm-up on dialogue. Write this in your warm-up section of notebook.
2. Read MDJ article 
3. Complete a persuasive paragraph supporting or opposing a position discussed in the article (HINT: RACER; 8 sentences).

TUESDAY
1. Take notes on 4 persuasive appeals (KELP)
2. Practice identifying appeals in print advertisements.
3. Watch The Great Debaters and complete the appeals organizer for the 3 debates in the film.  Also complete the viewing guide as these will serve as a study guide for quiz on Friday.

WEDNESDAY-THURSDAY
1. Warm-up: Write a paragraph explaining the persuasive appeals used in the anti-smoking ad.  Use TOP and RACER strategies to organize information.
2. Writer's Workshop: Analyze 2 student paragraphs from warm-up for RACER.  Revise your explanations so that they explain how your example supports your answer.
3. Watch The Great Debaters and complete the appeals organizer for the 3 debates in the film.  Also complete the viewing guide as these will serve as a study guide for quiz on Friday.
4. Complete vocab list #4 for the academic vocabulary related to our research/debate unit.
HOMEWORK: Study for quiz on vocab and persuasive appeals.

FRIDAY
1. Complete "Great Debaters" handout.  Have students refer to last page and notes to complete questions.

2.Read “America’s Schoolchildren” on pg. 70-74 in SpringBoard by President Obama. Complete questions 1-8 in textbook.  Identify the persuasive appeals in each of the 3 debates.
HOMEWORK: Vocab List #4, all Great Debaters questions due Monday 12th.
